Plant Trees Now! Advice from our “Master Gardner”
As the shortest month of the year, February fills up fast with things to do in your garden. This month deserves your full attention to set the scene for a healthy garden this spring and summer. Pruning, clean-ups and planting (particularly your fruit and citrus trees), should be the focus of February. Green Valley Nursery & Landscape grows and sells container fruit and citrus trees, which are more beneficial to your yard than bare root, because they are acclimated to our area.
Ornamental TreesWhat makes an ornamental tree different from a regular tree is a distinguishing feature, something that makes it stand out and catch your eye. Ornamental trees contain aesthetic characteristics such as flowers and foliage or perhaps unique bark or branches. These unique characteristics make ornamental trees a prime choice for a garden or landscape setting. Some uses in a landscape setting could be for providing a scenic view from the window, framing an entryway or creating a sense of intimacy around a deck or patio.
Fruit and Citrus TreesWhile gardeners should still protect the plants from the cold weather, now is the time to plant fruit trees and citrus trees. Taste fruit and citrus More >

October Garden Tips
Fall is the most spectacular time of the year in the garden. It’s the time when green foliage changes into a showy display of hues in the fall color spectrum. We see red mingled with burgundy, lime green with gold, bronze with purple on trees, shrubbery and blooms. Fall is nature’s growing season, when new plantings become established before winter chills. It’s the perfect time to select plants such as Nandina, Japanese Maple and Burning Bush to add brilliant color and interesting textures to your landscape. Many fall plants grown specifically for our unique climate zone are available at Green Valley Nursery & Landscape in El Dorado Hills. Here are just a few to plant separately or combine in pots to welcome fall with vibrant color.
Rosy Glow Barberry (Berberis) are hardy shrubs that provide a nice blend and balance of color with other fall foliage plants. The leaves are primarily burgundy colored with a pinkish tinge and are easily grown as foundations, borders or en masse. If you’re bothered by critters, no need to worry. Deer avoid Barberry because it’s covered with sharp barbs or thorns.
Sunset Gold Breath of Heaven (Coleonema) is a low-growing, mounding evergreen, which has soft, feathery foliage in a beautiful More >
